Into the Depths.

I watched you slip away,
behind those steely eyes.
Dragged into that other place,
where hope has gone to die.

I tried to be your buoy.
To hold you up for air.
But the murky depths,
dragged you still further to despair.

I had to let you slip,
beneath the icy waves.
For if I held more tightly,
we would both have meet our graves.

But as I watched you go,
my heart began to freeze.
To save itself from feeling pain
It shut out what it needs.

I know I had no choice.
The fight was lost before I knew,
I had a battle I had to win.
A war to wage for you.

Letting you go was so dam hard.
