Poem:Sorry…

I am sorry for the times I stood by and said nothing.
My words never reached the surface.
My silence was deafening.

I am sorry that I didn’t act sooner.
The times I watched you succumb and did nothing to step in.

More than this I am sorry I told you to take it, that you deserved it.
That you should accept this punishment as some form of pennence for a life you never lived.

You should have had me there with you, there to hold you in the dark,
but I walked away.

I escaped in those moments, to a place you could never follow.

You were not alone.
