Three ways to help yourself move through the hard stuff.

Life throws some punches you never see coming. The kind that steal your breath, shatter your peace, and leave you reeling. These past few months have been like that for me. Witnessing my daughter being attacked has left its mark. Nightmares replay the scene, and a relentless worry gnaws at me. New trauma igniting old.

But as we all often do, we struggle on and push forward. We work toward what we hope is a better day tomorrow. So I wanted to share my three ‘Ms’ for moving through it.

Music

Happy person listening to music. Music is magic

There’s a primal joy in finding your perfect song, that one track that washes over you and pulls you in. It’s more than just listening; it’s a full-body immersion. Music has this incredible power to unlock hidden emotions, to carry us down into the depths of our feelings, and then, just as powerfully, to lift us up and out the other side.

Movement

Feet dance around a room. Movement is magic

When it comes to mental health, exercise is often the first thing that comes to mind. And it’s true, consistent exercise provides a powerful foundation. But the beauty of movement is its variety. It can be dancing freely in your kitchen, the satisfaction of tending a garden, or even the simple act of tackling that cluttered cupboard. On a tough day, even just getting out of bed can make a difference. Movement, in all its forms, can be a powerful tool for boosting your mood.

Making

Someone completing a DIY task. DIY is making something too.

Forget the myth that creativity is reserved for artists and writers with their fancy tools! There’s a whole world of making waiting to be explored. It can be as simple as baking a cake, whipping up a delicious meal, or rearranging your room for a fresh feel. Even planning a weekend adventure can be a creative act. The magic lies in the process itself: taking something from scratch or transforming what already exists. It’s a powerful way to tap into your imagination and feel a sense of accomplishment.

So next time you’re feeling low, remember this dynamic trio: movement, music, and making. They’re readily available tools to lift your spirits, boost your mood, and unleash your inner creator. Let the music move you, the movement inspire you, and the making empower you!
